A breezy start is forecast today for the Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race with a veering North-East wind in the high teens. The wind should hold steady for the race and we could see a record breaking pace. Six multihulls are slated to start today, with 4 trimarans joining 37 monohulls.
2015 winner Tom Reese returns with his stock F28R Flight Simulator. Tom joins John Heizer with his stock F31 Tri t0 Fly. Tom Erdman brings Cheeky – his highly modified F31 with foils and canting rig and God knows what other modifications. Rounding out the trimaran fleet is Three Little Birds – Kevin Baxley skipper – an impressive custom 33 foot PT-11 racing trimaran from Performance Multihulls.
SORC, Lauderdale Yacht Club and The Storm Trysail Club have done a good job with the race management this year. The race tracker on the website will have you diverted from your work computer for some time.
Tactically, as the fleet heads south and starts to round down the Keys, it will be important to stay inshore of the Gulf Stream and not get lured out into the big blue. Watch them as they progress, but dont shout too loud if one of them bears away to Cuba.
